A Dry Friend

A rabbit was in search for dry leaves, after heavy seasonal rains made it`s burrow wet, moist and the ground very cold making it uncomfortable to live in cold winter. The rabbit searched for dry leaves around its burrow and at other places to make its burrow warmer and comfortable, however wasn't successful in finding any as most were either wet after heavy rains or simply not in good condition. The rabbit then decided to visit his fellow rabbit friend who lived in a burrow up the slope. His friend`s burrow was relatively dry and the rabbit asked his friend to lend him some dry leaves with which he could make his burrow comfortable. His friend said his burrow would become uncomfortable if it gave away its dry leaves. The rabbit then asked his friend if he could stay in his burrow for a few days till his place becomes dry, and this request was also declined by his friend.

Disappointed, the rabbit wondered where to search, when it saw a squirrel sitting on a tree right next to his friend's burrow and asked if it knew where it could get some dry leaves. The squirrel said finding dry leaves after heavy overnight rains was difficult, however it pointed to an eagle`s nest on top of the tree which it said will have dry leaves as the nest was exposed to the sun since morning. The rabbit asked the squirrel if it could help with some dry leaves from the nest. The squirrel agreed and found the eagle was away from the nest, and took this opportunity to go up the tree top. The squirrel reached the nest and began to carefully remove some dry leaves beneath the eggs and began to throw it down for the rabbit to pick. The squirrel hurriedly went about his job fearing the return of the eagle and in the process ended up tilting the nest which resulted in the eggs falling on the ground. The squirrel panicked and fled the tree, while the rabbit picked up whatever dry leaves it could grab and ran back to its burrow. The rabbit`s friend who then came out, found the eggs lying in front of its burrow, which puzzled it, and even before it could understand what happened the returning eagle seeing the rabbit near its egg on the ground, grew angry and grabbed the rabbit for its meal.
